About Program 4

Title: Macrophage-lineage cells and the inflammatory reaction to joint prostheses

Program 4 focuses on Osteoarthritis and joint implant failure.

Program 4 commenced at the beginning of 2004, after our CRC received supplementary funding from the Federal Government to commence this new area of research. Zimmer, the world’s leading orthopaedics company, is our industry partner for this research program.

Projects for this research program run in Melbourne and Brisbane, and the initial focus has been on setting up the necessary infrastructure, educating new staff, developing new methodologies and techniques and coordinating the collaborative arrangements, vital to research success.

Our industry partner, Zimmer, has recently undergone considerable expansion, which has resulted in it becoming the largest orthopaedic company worldwide. This represents an exciting opportunity for the CRC.
